Discipleship Training School

What is DTS?

Discipleship Training School (DTS) is a 5-month intensive training school focused on helping you grow in your relationship with God. The first 3 months of the school will be focused on discipleship and learning, and the next 2-3 months will be focused on reaching out to surrounding communities and countries with the love of Jesus. The goal of DTS is to help you grow and be discipled in your identity in Christ, and then learn how to share that with the world. DTS is community focused, and it is for everyone, whether you are just starting your journey with God, or whether you have been walking with Him for a long time. It is a safe place to learn, grow, and start reaching the nations with the gospel! YWAM Ethiopia - Life Overflowing has run 4 Discipleship Training Schools here in Addis Ababa so far, and we have an upcoming DTS beginning in January, 2024. If you are ready to grow in your relationship with God and bring Him to the world, this might be the place for you.

What does DTS look like?

  • Starting Out

If you are considering doing a DTS with us, this is a great place to start! Here are some important things for you to know before you apply and begin lecture phase: -DTS is a full time, live-in program, meaning you will be committing these 5 months to living in community as you focus on walking with Jesus. - You will have a mentor throughout these 5 months, and since this is a discipleship program, you will be expected to be open to sharing and growing. -You won’t just be learning in the classroom, there will also be many practical things, such as cooking, cleaning, and living well with others, that will be a part of this experience. -Our base is multi-cultural and bi-lingual, so expect to learn a lot about different cultures, and to hear a lot of both English and Amharic. -If possible, it may be helpful for you to have your passport. If you would like to get an idea of what else to bring, please look on our blog.

  • Lecture Phase

The first 12 weeks of the school, the lecture phase, focus on discipleship. We have class every week day, taught by guest speakers from all around the world, where we are taught on different topics having to do with our faith and relationship with God, such as Hearing God’s voice, Worship and Intercession, and Character and Nature of God. Along with lectures, you are being discipled by your staff and team leaders throughout these weeks and in intentional one-on-one settings, designed to help you grow and process well. You will also be doing life with other students and staff, inside and outside the classroom, since we will all be living in community. This provides an opportunity to build close connections with others who want to grow towards Jesus alongside you.

  • Outreach Phase

The second half of the school, the Outreach Phase, focuses on making God known to the world. Teams go out to different locations and live out what they have been learning in the previous twelve weeks. In the past we have gone to different locations all over Ethiopia, and to Djibouti. It is on our heart to send outreach groups to the surrounding countries in the future, and then to the whole world if the Lord opens the doors. In your two months of outreach you will get the opportunity to be a part of different types of ministries. In the past this has looked like evangelism, working with local churches, mercy ministry, and much more. The idea behind Outreach Phase is that you would not only get to share Jesus and make an impact on other people’s lives, but also that you would get to put the things you learned in Lecture Phase into practice. After going out in teams to different locations for the last two months of DTS, all the teams will return to Addis Ababa for a time of debrief.
